BIENNIAL SURVEYS OF ARCHITECTURE
Fresh Finnish architecture has been displayed in an exhibition and a book biennially from 2004. By now a total of 76 future classics have been presented in three surveys, and the next one will take place in the summer of 2010.
Each survey includes about 25 architectural works from the previous two years. They are selected by a jury of experts who assess proposals submitted for consideration but may select other works, too.
The Finnish Architecture biennial exhibitions are first shown in Helsinki and then toured in Finland and abroad. Those organised up to now (0203, 0405, 0607) have travelled around Europe, and the last one continues touring. Several presentations have been accompanied by lecture events and seminars.
The books are printed in English. Besides presenting the respective architectural works they contain views on contemporary Finnish architecture, the writers including both professionals and such outsiders who are interested in the built environment, and a calendar of events. They are sold in connection with the exhibition and in bookshops in Finland and around the world.
The biennial surveys are organised by the Alvar Aalto Academy, the Finnish Association of Architects SAFA and the Museum of Finnish Architecture.
Finnish Architecture 0809 will be open at the Museum of Finnish Architecture from 9 June to 26 September 2010.
