EVENTS IN ENGLISH

INTERPLAY OF CULTURES

Wednesday 24.10, 6 pm, Museum of Finnish Architecture
Round Table on Humanitarian Architecture

Round Table addressing the themes of the exhibition moderated by Saija Hollmén, curator of the exhibition and vice dean of the Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture

The international discourse on humanitarian architecture has significantly evolved during the last decades; the transformation of development collaboration from top-down governmental actions to more grass root-community involvement has created possibilities for smaller actors to participate and become active in the field of global sustainability & humanitarian development.

In the context of a foreign environment, culture becomes an inevitable factor in the designers work.

The round table discussion explores the cultural features and variables one needs to identify and acknowledge, when operating in foreign cultural contexts. It explores the emerging questions of responsibility, morals and values of the architectural profession, particularly in the context of cultural interaction.

It questions the predominant role of an architect in the contemporary society, both in Finland and in the globalizing world, in disadvantaged communities as well as in the more well-off environments. Finally, it asks what we can learn from ourselves, when venturing out to the unknown.

Insights will be offered by:
