SIR BANISTER FLETCHER AWARD 2007 FOR
EERO SAARINEN: SHAPING THE FUTURE

On Monday evening (12th November) at dinner at The Arts Club in Mayfair, London, ‘Eero Saarinen: Shaping the Future’, edited by Eeva-Lisa Pelkonen and Donald Albrecht and published by Yale University Press in collaboration with the the Museum of Finnish Architecture, the Finnish Cultural Institute in New York, and the National Building Museum, Washington D.C., with the support of Yale University School of Architecture was awarded the Authors’ Club Sir Banister Fletcher Award for 2007. The award was presented by artist Grayson Perry.

The Author’s Club Sir Banister Fletcher Award is presented annually for the most deserving book on art or architecture. This year was the 54th award. It is annually one of The Arts Club’s calendar highlights.

The book is part of a comprehensive Finnish-American research and exhibition project. The exhibition started its international tour a year ago in Helsinki, where it marked the 50th anniversary of the Museum of Finnish Architecture. Last week the exhibition started its tour in the United States from Cranbrook Art Museum, Bloomfield Hills.

The winning book, Eero Saarinen, Shaping the Future, studies the life of the Finnish-American architect and product designer, famous for his simple, sweeping, arching structural curves.

From the swooping concrete vaults of the TWA Terminal at JFK Airport to the 630-foot-tall Gateway Arch in St Louis, the iconic designs of Eero Saarinen (1910-1961) captured the aspirations and values of mid-twentieth-century America. This illustrated work offers a look at the entire scope of Saarinen's career.

Lavishly illustrated, this major study shows how Saarinen gave his structures an expressive dimension and helped introduce modern architecture to the mainstream American practice. In his search for a richer and more varied modern architecture, Saarinen become one of the most prolific and controversial practitioners of his time.

The book is available at the museum bookshop
