GAU:DI2
Governance, Architecture and Urbanism: Democracy and Interaction

The network of European architectural institutes that was established during the GAUDI1 project supported by the Culture 2000 programme of the European Union will continue its work. The main goals are to increase offerings of activities and to expand cooperation. Support from the EU will permit a wide range of programmes from 2005 to 2008.

In addition to the Museum of Finnish architecture, the participating bodies include the Cité de l’architecture et du patrimoine (Paris), the Mies van der Rohe Foundation of Barcelona, The Lighthouse (Glasgow), the Architecture Foundation (London), RIBA (London) and CIVA, the International Centre for Urbanism, Architecture and Landscape (Brussels), which is also the leading party in the programme.

The focuses of the GAUDI2 -programme are joint appearances and the wide distribution of the products. The themes of sustainable development and architectural education are included on a broad basis. The Museum of Finnish Architecture will particularly focus on these aspects during the three years of the scheme. The museum and the Lighthouse from Scotland jointly produced an exhibition on sustainable development in architecture especially aimed at children and young people. The exhibition New, old, green was shown in winter 2006–2007 at the Museum of Finnish Architecture. Integral aspects of the exhibition were various types of workshops, a wide range Web materials and teaching materials produced for educators. The exhibition will go on tour and Finnish-Scottish cooperation in architectural education will be continued in various forms throughout the project.

The second main project on the theme of sustainable development will be an architectural competition for students of architecture. Its concept is to link the theme to the curricula of certain schools of architecture in different parts of Europe and to develop it in workshops. The actual competition will be open to all students of architecture. The scale models of the winning entries will be the main features of an exhibition that will begin its tour at the Venice Biennial in 2008. The participating institution from Finland is the Department of Architecture of the University of Oulu.

The Museum of Finnish Architecture seeks to address the theme of sustainable development in different forms and to connect various types of activity to create a broad overall picture of the subject during the three-year projects. The final summary will be prepared at a seminar on the subject.

The new graphic design of the network and its new logo will improve and reinforce visibility. The publications of the programme will aim at a uniform look and efforts will be invested in joint showings at book fairs. With completely renewed content and graphic design, the new Web pages will be opened in 2007. The network’s renewed Web pages will include a completely new GAUDIKIDS section - the Museum of Finnish Architecture will produce electronic “workshops” for children for the GAUDIKIDS pages.

The GAUDI2 network operates through joint projects of increasingly closer cooperation. Their realization reflects the results of previous collaboration. The Museum of Finnish Architecture is actively present in all the areas of the programme.
