Summer School Letter 2024

Welcome to the Fill This Space Summer School of Architecture and Built Environment for 16-20 year olds!

The summer school is organized at the Design Museum (Korkeavuorenkatu 23, 00130 Helsinki) and the Architecture Museum (Kasarmikatu 24, 00130 Helsinki). In addition, during the summer school, trips are also made to other destinations located in the capital region (HSL area).

Pre-assignment: My favorite and least favorite place

Frans Saraste (M.Arch) is an architectural designer and doctoral researcher specialized in questions of sustainable architecture and living.

Wednesday 12 June

Theme: Reuse as care
Meeting place: Amos Rex (Mannerheimintie 22–24, 00100 Helsinki)

10–12 Visit: Amos Rex

Amos Rex offers unique and surprising experiences through presenting new, often experimental, contemporary art. I feel, for now is Amos Rex’s first exhibition of works from its own collections on this scale and takes us through the art into emotions. The more than a hundred artworks chosen for the exhibition carry us from isolation to empathy, from ecstasy to nostalgia.

Theme: Who do you care for?
Meeting place: Design Museum (Korkeavuorenkatu 23, 00130 Helsinki)

10–12 Visitor: Elina Koivisto from Suomi/Koivisto

Elina Koivisto is an architect (M.Sc. Aalto University 2013). Suomi/Koivisto is an architectural duo working in the field of environmental architecture based in Helsinki, Finland. Alusta pavilion is a pavilion which was built in the spring 2022 on the courtyard between the Design Museum and Museum of Finnish Architecture. The pavilion explores the relation between nature and culture and offers a place for encounters between humans and non-human animals in urban space.

Theme: FIXing as care
Meeting place: Design Museum (Korkeavuorenkatu 23, 00130 Helsinki)

13–13.30 Visit: Collections, Archive and Library of the Museum of Finnish Architecture and the Design Museum

The Museum of Finnish Architecture’s collections focus on the period after the year 1900. The aim of the collection activity is to record and review the creative process of an architect. The collections contain 500,000 drawings, 120,000 photographs and 800 scale models.​ The Design Museum’s collections are extensive and versatile and they shed light on the history and evolution of industrial arts in Finland. The collections include 75,000 objects, 45,000 drawings, and 125,000 images, with a data bank containing information on over 1,000 designers. The Museum of Finnish Architecture’s libary is a special library available to everyone. Books can also be borrowed. The collections contain a total of about 26,000 works from books to magazines and from interviews to correspondence.

Materials, equipment, trips and meals

Participation in the summer school is free of charge. The museums do not reimburse the costs of meals or accommodation from the summer school. Part of the activity is organized outdoors, so please prepare for the school days with weather-appropriate clothing and equipment. It’s good to have sunscreen and a bottle of water with you!

Materials and equipment

The Museum of Finnish Architecture and the Design Museum provide the necessary materials and equipment for summer school activities. Each participant receives a sketchbook and a pen from the museums at the beginning of the summer school. The participants’ own devices may also be used in summer schools. This will be mentioned separately.

Trips

All trips during the summer school week take place in the HSL area. Participants have had the opportunity to request a five-day HSL ticket (AB) from the museums if their own travel card is not valid during the summer school week or is not available. HSL tickets purchased in advance will be distributed to the persons who requested them at the beginning of the first day of the summer school.

Meals

Each summer school day includes a one-hour lunch break, for which it is good to bring your own snacks. The Design Museum has a refrigerator and a microwave oven. On Friday, the museums offer lunch for the entire summer school group. Diets, allergies and wishes regarding a shared lunch are collected during the summer school week.

Architecture and design belong to everyone. We at the Design Museum and the Museum of Finnish Architecture want everyone to have the opportunity to have a safe museum experience and participate as themselves, without fear of discrimination or harassment. You have been added to your summer school Whatsapp group with your consent. In the group, it is possible to discuss and ask questions related to school activities before and during the summer school. You can leave the group after the end of summer school.

Instructors

The instructors of the summer school are Annabel Kajetski, occupational therapist, contemporary artist and a museum pedagogue at the Design Museum and Museum of Finnish Architecture, and Seela Pentikäinen, a member of the You Tell Me collective and an architect.
