Architecture Speaks: Sheila Kennedy

Sheila Kennedy is an American architect, innovator and educator. She is a Professor of Architecture at MIT and a founding Principal of KVA Matx, an interdisciplinary practice that is widely recognized for innovation in architecture, material research and the design of next generation infrastructure for emerging public needs. KVA Matx works with business leaders, cultural institutions and public agencies to design new material applications and resilient ‘soft’ infrastructure for networked cities and urbanizing regions. The KVA Matx Portable Light Project, a non-profit global initiative to create energy harvesting textiles in the developing world has been recognized with two International Energy Globe Awards, a United States Congressional Award, and a Tech Museum Laureate Award for technology that benefits humanity.
Recent work in architecture includes the East 34thStreet Public Ferry Terminal in Manhattan, the Tozzer Anthropology building at Harvard University and the carbon neutral Soft House work live housing in Hamburg, Germany. Kennedy’s design work has been widely published and exhibited for instance at the United States Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, at MoMA, the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum Design Triennial and the Vitra Design Museum.
– I first became acquainted with Sheila Kennedy’s work through her pioneering materials research. She has developed innovations such as textiles that are able to take the sun’s energy and turn it into electricity. In her work as a designer and teacher, she focuses on how architects can develop more sustainable solutions, states Jenni Reuter, curator of the lecture series.
Architecture Speaks
This international lecture series is curated by Professor Jenni Reuter and organised by Aalto University Department of Architecture and the Museum of Finnish Architecture together with Archinfo Finland. The new season looks at themes related to sustainable development and how architecture can contribute toward building a more sustainable society. Six architects from various backgrounds are invited to share their thoughts and ideas on current trends in architecture.
